Professional Jen
Jen the publishing professional was established in 2004 when she took up her first post as copy editor at an education publisher after graduating with a degree in language and linguistics. For several more years she embraced the heady heights of senior editorship at an international publishing house.
Long story short, she had babies (really nice ones), fell out with big corporate life, and took her skills and tenacity to go it alone as a freelancer.
That was in 2010 and she hasn’t looked back. Except to wonder whether she left her favourite dictionary on her old desk.
While writing for other people is now Jen’s thing, she still runs her copy-editing business alongside, unable to resist keeping those pesky apostrophes in check. So her writing clients get all the benefits of having an eagle-eyed member of the grammar geeks on their side in one Hairy Cow package.
Nowadays, nothing gets Jen the professional more giddy* than working on copy for characterful independent businesses who want to make a difference to their world and ours.
*This is an untruth. Professional Jen also gets giddy about new stationery, anything to do with hairy cows, and getting actual letters through the post. -
Just Jen
Jen was established in 1978 in Yorkshire, England. She now lives in York with her husband (all-round Love Muppet, IT Department, and on-hand kids’ entertainer) and her two children (one is mostly hair, hood, and gloriously wide smiles; the other has a permanently wobbly tooth and a delightfully dirty laugh). Oh and two gerbils – Phat Gus and Pipkin.
When Jen isn’t working, she loves gambolling around the countryside with her family, especially if there are rocks to climb. She’s always got a book or three on the go. Recent favourites are by Matt Haig, Bob Mortimer, and Steven Pinker. She also loves watching any films without a long car chase in them, eating cheese and digestives (sometimes together), finding treasures in charity shops, and dreaming about making her own clothes.
Issues close to Jen’s heart are looking after her patch of the planet (one refill at a time) and working with the community sponsorship group she co-founded to help bring refugee families over to York.

Hilda
This is Hilda. She’s beautifully unkempt. Incredibly loyal. And Jen’s most honest critic.
